Before the turn of the 20th century, McGregor Blvd. was known as Riverside Avenue. Its original purpose was to run cattle along the route from Fort Myers to Punta Rassa.
In 1900, what is now McGregor Blvd. was paved. The widow of the late Standard Oil executive Ambrose McGregor offered the county financial assistance to pave and expand the road, but only under the condition that the name of the road is changed to honor her husband. The paving and expansion were completed in 1915 and the name was changed.
